In the late nineteenth century there was a collection of gothic short stories called The King in Yellow. Throughout the book a cursed play, titled The King in Yellow, appears. The play starts out by describing an unknown world. A little sci-fi and a little poetic. When the reader gets to Act 2, the plot takes a turn, grabbing ahold of the reader and driving them into a dark and horrible madness.
If that description lights a spark in your mind, you have a special relationship with books. They are kind of like magic objects. They are artifacts with a power beyond the author and beyond simple comprehension. There is a third mystical element, something hidden deep in our minds. Something that gets illuminated by things like a mysterious book title, a poetic phrase, an old photograph, great technologies or masterful design.
